Since 2004, the Global Center on Cooperative Security has supported communities to reduce violence and save lives, reform institutions to protect human rights, and shape domestic and international security policies to build a just and secure world. As we celebrate our 20th anniversary and reflect on the last two decades, we are proud of the positive impact we have made together with our partners.
Over 20 years, the Global Center has implemented more than $60 million in grant funding across 300 programs in more than 60 countries, working with governments, international organizations, the private sector, and community groups.
Our Work in Action
Since our founding, the Global Center has made significant contributions to promoting peace and security worldwide by, for example:
- Protecting Human Rights in Counterterrorism – As governments increasingly use global counterterrorism efforts to justify repression, we continue to deepen our work that protects the most vulnerable communities living in conflict. Since 2018, we have provided over $4 million to regional, national, grassroots civil society partners worldwide for human rights, peacebuilding, and preventing violent extremism initiatives in communities most impacted by political violence.
- Breaking Cycles of Violence – We have developed national strategies that prevent violent extremism and worked with local authorities and community organizations to support their implementation across Africa, Central Asia, and Southeast Asia. We have partnered with Supreme Court justices on the handling of terrorism cases, trained corrections officers at all maximum security prisons in four countries, and collaborated with psychologists on creating rehabilitation and reintegration programs that reduce recidivism.
- Rehabilitation and Reintegration of Youth – From 2020 to 2022, we partnered with Social Welfare, Academics and Training (SWAaT) in Pakistan to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of nearly 200 vulnerable young people who turned away from militant groups in Afghanistan and Pakistan, helping them create a better life for themselves and their families amidst struggles with deprivation, conflict, and trauma further complicated by the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan.
Support Us in Making a Bigger Impact in the Next 20 Years
We believe that a just and secure world can only be achieved through policies and programs that protect human rights, leverage cooperative and strategic partnerships, and address broader drivers of violence and insecurity, including corruption, the climate crisis, and socio-economic inequalities.
As the threat of terrorism and global conflict evolves, our work to advance human rights–centered responses to political violence, violent extremism, and injustice worldwide is even more important now than ever before. A gift to the Global Center is an investment in human security, human rights, and justice for all.
